Lula’s government asks the OAS to withdraw its criticism of the Nicaraguan dictatorship

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sent a text to the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) asking for the withdrawal of criticism of the Nicaraguan dictatorship, as a way of softening the relationship with the country allied with the PT government.

The text was sent in preparation for the meeting of OAS countries, to be held next week in Washington, where members intend to plan and approve a resolution critical of the situation in Nicaragua, which has violated the human rights of dissidents.

The OAS presented member countries with a text proposing measures against Nicaragua. However, the Brazilian government suggested modifications, especially regarding the point that the organization calls for the return of democracy in Nicaragua, while the PT government calls for the “strengthening of democracy”.

Another point suggested by the government for modification is that “express concern” be used instead of “deep concern” with the reports of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on the repression in Nicaragua.

In addition, Brazil also asks for the removal of the passages that speak of “confiscation of assets and denial of pensions to people by the government”. It also adds the word “alleged” to the document before denunciations of “violations of the right to property” in the country.
