President will take a break from travel
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed this Friday (1st) that he will undergo hip surgery in October this year. He had already announced the need for an operation in July, when he even had an infiltration procedure to relieve pain in the region.
Lula has osteoarthritis in the head of the femur, which is wear on the cartilage that lines the joints, and has been complaining of pain more frequently.
“I’m going to stop because, I want to confess, this pain hurts during the day, it hurts sitting down, it hurts standing up, it hurts lying down, and there’s no remedy. The remedy is to operate”, he said during the inspection ceremony for the transposition of the São Francisco River, in Rio Grande do Norte.
Lula explained that the last trip he will make will still be in September, to attend the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, and the G77 meeting (a coalition of 134 developing nations of which Brazil is a part), in Cuba. Before that, he still goes to India for the G20 Summit. The last commitment in Brasilia will be the reception to the president of Vietnam, on September 26, and then the president will take a break from his commitments this year to undergo surgery and subsequent recovery.
