President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Tuesday (30) that racism is transcendental and again condemned the violence suffered by Brazilian soccer player Vinicius Junior.
Lula also praised Vinicius Junior’s stance and said that if he rose up against his aggressors, then everyone can and should do more to combat discrimination.
“Racism transcends borders, as demonstrated by the constant abuse of Brazilian soccer player Vinicius Junior. The lesson we can draw from these unforgivable episodes is that if Vini Junior, a 22-year-old, is capable of standing up against hostile crowds, there is no doubt that we can and must do more to stop this disheartening cycle of violence”, said the president, in a session of a UN forum.
On the 21st, Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior was expelled after a riot started after racist insults uttered against him by Valencia fans. The teams faced each other at the Mestalla stadium, for the 35th round of the Spanish Championship – the team from the capital was defeated by 1-0.
Images show the moment when the Brazilian national team player faces fans of the home team close to the bottom line. The situation caused an agglomeration between athletes from both teams and the match was interrupted for a moment. Only the Brazilian was expelled, with interference from the VAR (video assistant referee).
The case generated great reaction around the world. His expulsion was reversed and Spanish authorities began actions to combat racist attacks in the country.
The president’s message was in a short video that was broadcast at the 2nd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum for People of African Descent.
Brazil is being represented at the event by the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco. The minister, however, took the president’s video message. Lula then suggested that a next session of the Forum be held in Brazil.
“More than ever, this Forum is essential to advance the United Nations declaration on the right of people of African descent. The Brazilian delegation, led by the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, reiterates its commitment to the banner of racial equality at the domestic level and internationally, leaving doors open for holding the Forum session in Brazil,” said the president.
“With the participation of each and every one of you in this fight, I am certain that we will turn the game against racism”, he added.
