Lula says he will discuss international regulation of social networks with Biden

President Lula (PT) defended the existence of an international regulation of social networks and stated that he will discuss the issue with President Joe Biden, of the United States, during a meeting between the two presidents that should take place on February 10th. Lula also defended that social media companies be held accountable for the content published on their platforms. The statements by the President of the Republic were made in an interview with Rede TV on Monday night (2).

“If it is a lie, it cannot be published. I think that maybe nobody knows how to do it alone, but if we open up a debate in society, if we open up people who are specialists in the Internet, if we open up the media, and we have a discussion. We are going to deal with that”, declared Lula, referring to the president of the United States.

“I think the only way to have regulation is worldwide. It is not possible to make a regulation only in the country. Therefore, it needs to be a subject to be discussed at the G20. See, Biden beat Trump, but he didn’t beat the far right, it’s alive. Here in Brazil, we defeated Bolsonaro, but it is still possible to defeat Bolsonarism, which is the fanatic, the one who believes in everything, the one who offends people, the one who curses”, he said.

“I don’t know how to do it, but we are going to try to establish a discussion in Brazilian society, because we have to make companies a little responsible, you know? That they foment”, affirmed the Brazilian president. “There is no need for censorship. If society participates and finds a common dominator that such a thing has to be stopped by the company itself. You can’t publish something and just say ‘That’s a lie’, declared Lula.
