Lewandowski defends global regulation of social networks: “urgent need”

Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), said this Friday (3) that the acts of vandalism on January 8 in Brasília unified the country. Lewandowski made the statement in conversation with journalists, shortly after his participation in a conference promoted by Lide Brasil, which takes place in Lisbon, Portugal.

“I assess the country’s situation very optimistically. I think that the terrible, serious acts, the dark episode of January 8, actually unified the country, after the destruction of the headquarters of the Three Powers. What we saw was a union of Brazilians, a union of Powers, of governors, around democracy and governance itself”, he said.

Questioned about the alleged coup plan reported by Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES), the minister said that if the congressman’s complaint is confirmed, it will be a very serious fact that must be investigated and will have very serious consequences.

Regulation of social networks is urgent

When answering a question about a statement by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who at the same event defended a regulation of social networks to prevent new acts of vandalism, as seen in Brasília, from happening again, Lewandowski stated that the discussion is necessary and urgent.

“I think this is an urgent need. We need to regulate social networks, especially so that messages of hate, prejudice and also fake news, which are extremely harmful, are not disseminated. But I am convinced that, although it is important for the different countries or sovereign states to enact legislation in this regard, there must be international regulation”, he said.

Democratic elections in Congress

Lewandowski also said that the elections for the presidency of the Senate and the House took place in a democratic manner and that both Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and federal deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL) are experienced politicians and that this is yet another step towards the consolidation of democracy in our country.

“I am also very optimistic about the democratic manner in which the election of the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies took place. It was an absolutely peaceful election. The two elected are very experienced, are prepared and have a speech of dialogue with the other Powers. The election of these two leaders is another step towards consolidating our democracy, which has been seriously threatened by recent events,” he said.

The speeches of the ministers of the STF are similar to the statements of President Lula (PT), who said yesterday in an interview that he intends to discuss with President Joe Biden, of the United States, a global regulation of social networks.
