Tarcísio says he will not extend full-time – 02/03/2023 – Education

On the first day of classes at state schools in São Paulo, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) said that he will not maintain the policy of accelerated expansion of the full-time education model. For him, it is first necessary to invest in the quality of those who already have extended working hours.

“At this first moment, we are not going to continue expanding. There is no point in increasing the full time without qualifying and structuring the ones that already have”, said the governor this Friday (3). He accompanied the first of classes at the state school Rômulo Pero, in the north of the capital.

The expansion of full-time schools was the main bet of João Doria and Rodrigo Garcia’s (PSDB) administration for São Paulo education over the last four years. In 2019, 417 units of the state network had the model. In 2023, there are 2,311 with the modality.

The accelerated implementation brought problems to the São Paulo education network, such as a lack of vacancies in regions of the capital and the transfer of students to night classes. In some cases, schools also began to receive students for a longer period of time, even without having adequate structure for this.

“We are going to look at the infrastructure of the schools that already have the model and take care of them. There has been a very rapid expansion in recent years and now we need to look at what was missing. We are going to improve the infrastructure, prepare good teaching materials”, said the governor.

Tarcísio stated that his bet to improve the quality of education in São Paulo is the expansion of vocational education. “We have the additional challenge of adding vocational education to full-time schools. That is why we are going to be careful and careful in expanding.”

At the beginning of January, Renato Feder, Secretary of Education, said that the government’s goal is to have half of secondary school enrollments with vocational education. Currently, only 10.6% (about 143.8 thousand of a network with more than 1.35 million at this stage) of students in the state network are in technical courses.

Tarcísio’s management has also defended the inclusion of new subjects in the school curriculum as a way of making teaching more attractive to young people. Among the plans is, from 2024, to implement programming and financial education classes in the school curriculum.
