President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, on the night of this Thursday (29), that left-wing movements “confront” the usual right-wing discourse, family and patriotism, at the same time that he says he is proud of “being called a communist.
The statement was given during the opening of the 26th meeting of the Foro de São Paulo, held in Brasília, with leftist movements in Latin America.
“Here, in Brazil, we face the discourse of custom, family and patriotism. In other words, we face the discourse that we have historically learned to combat”, he said during the event.
Lula was responsible for the main speech at the event, in which he cited the difficulties that the left has encountered around the world and the need for integration between the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to enter spaces occupied by the extreme right.
“We need to re-discuss the discourse of the left. Often, the right has an easier time than us with a fascist discourse. In Europe, the left has lost discourse on the issue of migration,” he added.
Still during the speech, Lula praised “comrade Chávez”, in reference to the Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez, whom he says he admires. “He would criticize in person and praise in public,” said the president.
