Law that makes National Zombie and Black Consciousness Day a holiday, to be celebrated on November 20, was published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Friday (22). This is what Law 14,759 determines, sanctioned the previous day by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Approved by the Chamber of Deputies in November, the bill originated from the Senate bill, by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, from Amapá. Under the report of the senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), the text was finally approved by the Education Committee (CE) in August 2021 and went on to the Chamber for consideration, where it was reported by the deputy Reginete Bishop (PT-RS).

Currently, the day is already a holiday in six states, including Amapá, and around 1,200 cities. The date refers to the day of the death of Zumbi, the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest in history.

Paim highlighted that this will be a day of reflection and combating all forms of prejudice.

— This day is much more, much more, it goes beyond being a holiday, it is a moment of awareness, debate, dialogue about all forms of prejudice, discrimination and racism that affects the entire society. So, for me, it is a day of peace, of love, of fraternity, in which the country would reflect that we can be a great nation if we know how to combat all types of prejudice – he stated in a session in November.

Author of the proposal, Randolfe celebrated the presidential sanction on social media: “REPAIR AND JUSTICE! President Lula today sanctioned the bill of our authorship that declares National Zombie and Black Consciousness Day a holiday throughout Brazil. Starting next year, November 20th will be a national holiday to reinforce the fight against racism and the need to reflect on the memory and resistance of black people throughout the country!”
