At the gates of the electoral campaign, Lula warned that he did not intend to play along with some of his opponents. “I will not give importance to the clay doll called Moro”, he said, in an interview in January 2022.

The decision was tactical. Although Lula wanted to face Moro, the idea was to prevent Lava Jato from becoming a burning point in the election, giving ammunition to rivals interested in associating the PT with corruption.

The president himself pulled Lava Jato back to the center of the political arena in the last week, saying that, in prison, he thought of taking revenge on Moro. The next day, he raised suspicions without evidence about the police operation that dismantled a plan to attack the former judge.

With the seal of the Presidency, Lula felt calm enough to resume that clash. The arrival at Planalto, according to the vision he drew in recent years, would be a chapter in his victory against the task force. In addition, the petista tried to hit Moro at the moment when the former judge was parading under the spotlight. The low game that the president resorted to when spreading a conspiracy theory about his rival, however, has already become a stain in this fight.

Keeping the Lava Jato antagonism alive could be useful in Lula’s effort to crystallize the image that the operation had political objectives. But the move also renewed the breath of members of the task force who assumed this political role. Until then, Moro was half forgotten in the Senate. In the conflict with Lula, he spent the week applauded by Bolsonarists – which should not make the former president comfortable in the role of leader of the opposition.

Other side effects should be more bothersome for the group from Curitiba. This Tuesday (28), the new judge of the operation asked the PF to investigate an accusation made by lawyer Rodrigo Tacla Duran. He says he suffered extortion from a friend of Moro in exchange for benefits in court. With all eyes on Lava Jato again, the case tends to attract more attention.
