President Lula (PT) chose lawyer Edilene Lôbo as the new substitute minister of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court). She is the first black woman to hold the position, taking over from André Ramos Tavares, who became the head of the Court.

The announcement was made by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, President of the Electoral Court, during the opening of the second plenary session that analyzes the process that could make former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible for eight years.

Edilene’s name was on the list sent by the STF (Federal Supreme Court) to Lula for appointment to the post. The PT candidate passed over two women lawyers who were running for the vacancy: Daniela Borges (who has good ties with PT wings) and Marilda Silveira (who is close to Minister Flávio Dino).

Now, it is up to the TSE to set the date of the lawyer’s tenure at the Court.

The new substitute minister sought out STF ministers to garner support in the dispute. In May, she participated in an audience with Rosa Weber, president of the Court, to discuss the TSE nomination.

The lawyer defended Dilma Rousseff (PT) in 2018, during the Senate campaign for Minas Gerais. She also defended the PT many years ago and is currently one of the lawyers for the Brazilian Federation of Hope, made up of PT, PC do B and PV.

The President of the Republic had already nominated, at the end of May, Floriano de Azevedo Marques e Tavares for two open vacancies in the electoral court, as holders.
