The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Tuesday (4) the appointment of retired Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Ricardo Lewandowski to the position of arbitrator of the Permanent Court of Review of Mercosur. Lewandowski will be responsible for mediating legal disputes between the countries that make up the bloc.

Brazil assumed the presidency of Mercosur – formed by Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – this Tuesday. In April, Lewandowski retired from the Court and reactivated his registration with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) to return to practicing law. The ex-minister’s term in the bloc’s court will begin on July 28.

According to the Itamaraty, Lewandowski will assume the presidency of the court in 2024. In a note, the ministry stated that “the Court has the attribution, in cases of controversy or advisory opinions brought to its consideration, to interpret and propose measures aimed at promoting compliance of the instruments and norms on which the integration process is based”.
