Lula doesn’t need livebearers – 02/13/2024 – Elio Gaspari

With eight years of government under his belt and having gone through an attempted coup d’état after his election and even after taking office, Lula proved to be exemplary in his relations with the military.

In a trick of history, on his return, he was preceded by a former captain who destroyed 30 years of rebuilding relations between the Armed Forces and politics. If someone wanted to invent a character to do similar damage, they would need a lot of imagination.

The former captain filled the government with officers, placed a superintendent general at the Ministry of Health, fought the vaccine and praised chloroquine. Foreshadowing apocalypses, he manipulated generals to challenge the electoral result, pretending that they doubted the fairness of electronic voting machines. He associated the image of Army officers with illegal mining. Such was the mess that an aide-de-camp became a prominent figure in his government. This only happened before, to a much lesser extent, during the governments of João Goulart and João Batista Figueiredo.

Bolsonaro’s anarchy resulted in the botched plotting of a coup against the electoral result and the vandalization of the headquarters of the three Powers on January 8th. Fortunately, investigations have come to fruition.

The impeccable relationship established by Lula needs to be maintained and respected. The military must be held together based on their professionalism. He was the one who blocked Bolsonaro’s coup. Contrary to what General Braga Netto, candidate for vice on the former captain’s ticket, thought, a general who respected the electoral result did not become a PT member “since he was a child”.

No matter how much effort is made, no one believes that the majority of generals and colonels voted for Lula. Fortunately, no prominent vivanderas emerged from the civilian community. On the night of the second round, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, was the first to recognize the electoral result.

As there were no relevant live-winners on one side, the exposure of the details of Bolsonaro’s plot should not encourage the emergence of live-winners with a changed sign. Investigations into Bolsonaro’s plots are being conducted by the Federal Police, under the watchful eye of Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Revelations have flowed from these two sources, but they have not leaked slander. That’s just what you need.

This characteristic, associated with Lula’s behavior, guarantees the preservation of the unity of the Armed Forces. Anyone who stepped outside the four lines of the Constitution must pay, based on investigations and by decision of the Court. Beyond that, all that remains is the world of gossip and backstabbing. It was the military division of the second half of the 20th century that helped produce 1964.

Bolsonaro’s coup articulation was made of glass and broke. Besides him, the civilians who roamed the barracks were unimpressive. In this, 2022 differs, for good, from the scenarios of the last century. Civilians like Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Lula gave quality to the relationship between politics and the military. An ex-captain came and almost ruined everything.

In 1964, João Goulart believed he was protected by a “military device”. More than half a century later, Jair Bolsonaro spoke of “my Army”. They were wrong.
