There will be 34 new river and land bases with state and federal forces, guaranteed the president
Manaus (AM) – The capital of Amazonas will receive an International Police Cooperation Center to fight crimes and monitor the Amazon region. The official announcement was made this Tuesday (8), by President Lula, during the first day of the Amazon Summit taking place in Belém, Pará.
“We are going to establish, in Manaus, an international police cooperation center to face the crimes that affect the region. The new Security Plan for the Amazon will create 34 new river and land bases, with the constant presence of federal and state forces”,
announced the president during the Summit.
Still according to Lula, the government will deploy the Armed Forces to combat crime in the Amazon.
“The support of the Armed Forces, especially along the border, will also be essential in this effort. It will also allow for the future creation of an integrated air traffic control system in the Amazon region”,
highlighted the Chief Executive.
The president stated that “criminal networks are organized transnationally, increasing insecurity throughout the region” and emphasized that his administration is committed to reversing this situation.
“We can already see results. Deforestation alerts in the Amazon had a reduction of 42.5% in the first seven months of this year. We are committed to zero deforestation by 2030,” said Lula. He also reinforced that cooperation between the Amazonian countries is essential to guarantee the security of the region.
The meeting brings together representatives of the eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO): Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
Bethlehem Declaration
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Tuesday (8th) that the Declaration of Belém, which will be adopted by the heads of state of the Amazonian countries, will be a detailed and comprehensive plan of action for the sustainable development of the Amazon. In a speech at the Amazon Summit, in Belém, Lula said that the solutions pass through science and the knowledge produced in the region.
“The presidential declaration of this summit shows that what we started in Letícia and now consolidate in Belém is not just a political message: it is a detailed and comprehensive plan of action for sustainable development in the Amazon”, he said.
“The Amazon is not and cannot be treated as a great deposit of riches. It is an incubator of knowledge and technologies that we have barely begun to scale. Here may be solutions to many of humanity’s problems – from curing diseases to more sustainable trade. The forest is not a void to be occupied, nor a treasure to be looted. It is a bed of possibilities that needs to be cultivated”, added the president.
