Lula criticizes powers on World Environment Day – 06/05/2023 – Environment

President Lula (PT) ignored this Monday (5), in an event in honor of World Environment Day, the internal setbacks and blamed foreign countries for the climate crisis for allocating more money to wars than to protecting nature.

The representative did not mention in his speech the approval of the time frame for the demarcation of indigenous lands in the Chamber, nor the new design of the Esplanada approved by the Legislature that emptied the ministries of the Environment and Indigenous Peoples.

The emptying occurred without the government offering great resistance or establishing the strengthening of portfolios as a priority for political articulation.

Lula, however, stated at the event that he will be intransigent in defending environmental guidelines and criticized developed countries for not fulfilling their promise to invest in a fund for the preservation of forests.

“These countries committed to providing US$ 100 billion a year, until 2020, to help developing countries to face climate change. That commitment was not fulfilled. At the same time, even bigger amounts are invested in wars around the world. world, which kill men, women and children and destroy everything around them, including the environment,” said the president.

Earlier, at the same event, Marina Silva classified the decision of the National Congress that emptied the folder under her responsibility as a “retrogression”. She stated that the changes approved by the Legislature go “against what it means to have robust environmental legislation”.

The minister said that Lula had placed the CAR (Rural Environmental Registry) and the ANA (National Water Agency) under the management of the Ministry of the Environment, but the decision was reversed by the Legislature.

“Unfortunately, in a recent decision by Congress, we had a setback and reversal of this decision. It is a decision that is not in line with what is the strengthening of the national environmental system, which we accept because in democracy we accept legitimate decisions of Congress , but I cannot agree,” he said.

And he continued: “I cannot agree because they go against the grain of what it means to have robust environmental legislation and [que] ensure that the Ministry of the Environment can fulfill its attributions conferred upon it in the Constitution and in all the laws that ensured the creation of the national environment system”.
