Bruno and Dom should be here today, says Lula – 05/06/2023 – Daily life

President Lula (PT) stated that Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira should be at the Planalto Palace this Monday (5) and would be considered allies of the current government. The indigenist and the British journalist were murdered on June 5 last year in the Javari Valley, in the Amazon.
Lula paid tribute to the two at the event that celebrated World Environment Day.
“Bruno and Dom deserved and should be here, at this moment when they would have the Brazilian government as an ally and not as an enemy, contrary to what happened in the last four years”, he said, referring to the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
And he continued: “A year ago, the brutal murder of which they were victims shocked the world, which came to see the Amazon as a land without law and on the verge of destruction, with an enormous threat to face the climate emergency”.
The crime turned one year old this week and mobilized demonstrations in the country. In Rio de Janeiro, the protest was marked by criticism that, a year after the deaths, measures were not taken to protect indigenous lands.
“They’re still banging their heads. They didn’t actually take effective measures. The Brazilian State owes the world an explanation, because the world was moved by these murders”, said Beto Marubo, leader of Univaja (Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javari Valley), organization in which Bruno also worked.
The group also cited recent setbacks, such as the approval of the time frame bill in the Chamber of Deputies and the weakening of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, which, with the approval of the Esplanada MP, lost competence for land demarcation.
