There will be investments, growth and tax justice, says president
The approval of the tax reform was celebrated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his social networks. In a tone of gratitude to the National Congress, he said that, in addition to facilitating investments and helping the country to grow, the new legislation will result in more tax justice with the rich paying more and the poor paying less taxes.
“Yesterday [sexta-feira (15)], we managed to approve, for the first time in history, a tax reform policy. The capacity of Haddad, Padilha, José Guimarães, Jaques Wagner was so great that we got approval. I want to thank Congress. A reform to facilitate investment, for those who have more to pay more tax and those who have less to pay less and make Brazil grow even more”, highlighted the President of the Republic through his account on X, formerly Twitter.
The approval in the second round, in the Chamber, of the basic text of the tax reform on consumption was by 365 votes in favor, 116 against and one abstention.
Highlights
Parliamentarians voted on two highlights before concluding the session. The first maintained the original text, but the second removed weapons and ammunition from the selective tax, by 293 votes in favor and 193 against.
The approved highlights maintained incentives for the automotive sector and battery manufacturers in the North, Northeast and Center-West and reinstituted the authorization for the salaries of state and municipal tax auditors to be equal to those of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
As the tax reform did not undergo changes of merit in relation to the text approved by the Senate, Congress will enact the constitutional amendment for the tax reform next week, announced deputy José Guimarães (PT-CE), leader of the Government in the Chamber.
With the end of the vote, Congress concludes more than 30 years of discussions, after successive proposals that did not prosper in recent decades.
