The former mayor of Pelotas (RS) Fernando Marroni took office on Monday (26) as president of Trensurb (Urban Train Company of Porto Alegre), a state-owned company linked to the federal government.

Marroni was appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and had his name confirmed by the company’s board.

In 2000, when he was mayor, he ended up being involved in a controversy, after a video was leaked in which Lula made a homophobic joke about the city.

“Pelotas is a central city, right? It exports deer,” said the current president to Marroni, unaware that he was being recorded. The statement was exploited in that year’s municipal campaign by PT opponents, such as former mayor Paulo Maluf, who was running for election in São Paulo against Marta Suplicy.

Trensurb even entered the privatization plan of former Economy Minister Paulo Guedes. The goal, frustrated, was to sell control of the company by 2021.
