Lula appoints Sabino and makes the 2nd change in ministries official – 07/14/2023 – Power

President Lula (PT) made official in an extra session of the Official Gazette this Friday (14) the dismissal of Daniela Carneiro from the Ministry of Tourism and the appointment of deputy Celso Sabino (União Brasil-PA) to head the portfolio.

This is Lula’s second change in the first echelon, 194 days into his third term. The change is part of the president’s strategy to improve his relationship with União Brasil and guarantee the party’s votes in the Chamber of Deputies.

On Thursday (13), Lula had met with Sabino and confirmed the exchange, which, according to a note from the Planalto, should take place “in the next few days”.

The soap opera of the change in Tourism lasted more than a month and even threatened the vote on the Tax Reform in the Chamber, when Daniela was expected to leave, but the government chose to keep it temporarily while negotiating the conditions for the changes.

Sabino released a video on Thursday to thank Lula for inviting him. This Friday, he was at the Planalto Palace for a meeting with the Minister of Civil Affairs, Rui Costa.

“Celso Sabino stated that he is willing to collaborate with the government and very willing to work”, says the note from the Civil House.

The first change in Lula’s first echelon took place in April, with the resignation of General Gonçalves Dias, who occupied the GSI (Institutional Security Office). The military’s situation in office became unsustainable after videos called into question the performance of the then minister on January 8 of this year, when there were attacks on the headquarters of the three Powers.

With Daniela’s departure, female representation in Lula’s ministry drops to 10 titular women (instead of 11), among the 37 portfolios.
