Lira says that Lula and PT will be by her side in the succession for presidency of the Chamber – 02/23/2024 – Power

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this Friday (23) in Rio de Janeiro that President Lula (PT) should support his candidate for succession as president of the Chamber, in an election scheduled for February 2025. Lira will not be able to run for reelection again.

“President Lula has the right to make his successor, as I have my intention, listening to all party leaders and friends in the Chamber to make our successor,” said Lira.

“President Lula knows and said that he will be involved in this project to accompany me so that I have the right to make my successor, and the PT I don’t think he will think differently, because there is no reason, all commitments are being honored”, said Lira at an event this Friday (23) at FGV in Rio de Janeiro.

Although in conversations with allies Lira has not indicated who her candidate will be, there is an assessment that two names are stronger in the dispute for her support: the leader of União Brasil, Elmar Nascimento (BA), and the vice-president of Chamber, Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP). According to reports, Lira has told them that she will support whoever is successful in the dispute.

There are still two leaders who are on the outside as possible alternatives. The PSD, Antonio Brito (BA), and the MDB, Isnaldo Bulhões Jr. (AL). Both have courted the federal government.

According to interlocutors, Elmar and Pereira signed an agreement. When the election gets closer, only one will continue in the race, in this case, the one who has received the most endorsement among his colleagues.

Lula received Lira and party leaders on Thursday night (22), at the Palácio da Alvorada. The meeting takes place amid complaints from parliamentarians about the Executive’s political articulation.

Ministers such as Fernando Haddad (Finance), Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations Secretariat) and Rui Costa (Civil House) also participated.

Since the end of last year, the Chamber’s leadership has been complaining about the government’s articulation, what they consider to be a low budget execution by the Executive and, mainly, about the performance of Padilha, whom they accuse of not fulfilling agreements — especially regarding the funds from the Ministry of Health sponsored by parliamentarians.

According to reports from participants, the president signaled that he wants to bring dialogue closer to parliamentarians and that meetings like these should be more frequent. He stated that he understands that it is necessary for the Executive and Parliament to work in harmony and in tune.
