The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), increased by 137% the value of the housing allowance reimbursement supplement for parliamentarians, on the eve of the election for the new Board of Directors of the House for the 2023/2024 biennium, which will take place on the 1st of February.

The value of the complement, through compensation of parliamentary quota, which is currently R$ 1,747, increased to R$ 4,148.80. With the decision published in the Official Gazette of the Chamber on Monday (23), the value of the benefit of BRL 4,253 could reach BRL 8,401.

Housing allowance is paid to deputies and senators who do not occupy functional properties in Brasília. The Chamber has 432 functional properties intended for the residence of federal deputies in effective exercise of their mandate, of which 345 are currently occupied.

The amount may be paid to the parliamentarian in cash, subject to income tax deduction at source, or by reimbursement of expenses, upon presentation of a hotel service invoice or lease agreement and rent receipt, in which case, exempt from income tax. In the decision, Lira states that the act seeks to adapt the value of the Quota for the Exercise of Parliamentary Activity to the highest costs related to the exercise of the mandate, which are displacement and housing.

The Board of Directors of the Chamber is responsible for directing the legislative works and the administrative services of the House. Among its attributions is also the enactment of amendments to the Constitution, together with the Senate. It is composed of the Presidency (president and two vice-presidents) and the Secretariat, formed by four secretaries and four alternates.
