Liberation of Brazilian women in Germany had contact with MPs – 04/13/2023 – Panel

The release of two Brazilian women who were imprisoned in Germany on the false accusation of international drug trafficking was preceded by a contact between the Public Ministry of the European country and its Brazilian counterpart.

Last Tuesday (11), a few hours before the release of Kátyna Baía and Jeanne Paolini, a representative of the German Public Prosecutor’s Office made an informal request for information to an authority following the case at the Brazilian Federal Public Ministry.

He wanted to make sure that the information passed by the Ministry of Justice, that there was no involvement of both in the crime, was correct. With the confirmation that they had been victims of a gang specialized in changing luggage tags, which had already been dismantled, the release could go ahead.

As the Panel showed, the process would have been much faster if Brazil had already been part of Eurojust, the European Union’s criminal justice agency. The invitation was made in 2021, but authorizations from the Itamaraty and the National Congress are still pending.
