Bronny James, eldest son of LeBron James, suffered a cardiac arrest while participating in training with his basketball team at the University of Southern California (USC), on Monday (25). According to the American news portal TMZ Sports, the 18-year-old was immediately taken to the hospital and is stable, outside the ICU.

“Yesterday, while training, Bronny James suffered cardiac arrest. The medical team were able to rescue Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is in stable condition and has since been released from ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and will update the media when we have more information,” a spokesperson for the family told TMZ. “LeBron and Savannah (the player’s wife) publicly thank the USC medical team for their incredible work and dedication towards the safety of athletes,” he added.

Bronny, 1.91 meters tall, plays point guard and has generated anticipation in the basketball world. He had the option of playing in the G League, the NBA’s developmental league, this season, but chose to play in the college league (NCAA) for USC, which announced it in May of this year. Before, the young man played for Sierra Canyon High School, also in California, while he was in high school.

The 18-year-old point guard is quoted for the 2024 draft, the process of recruiting young talent for the NBA. It would be the first time that father and son played together in the NBA.

Now, the achievement of the goal will depend on what the medical tests after the cardiac arrest will reveal about the health of Bronny, who has a close example of a similar situation. Shareef O’Neal, son of Shaquile O’Neal and friend of Bronny, also had a heart condition in 2018, when he was a teen basketball star, and required surgery. He was undrafted in the 2022 draft, which he was eligible for, and now plays in the G League for Ignite.
