LeBron James became the all-time leading scorer in NBA history on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Lakers star surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and set a new record in the American Basketball League. It didn’t take long for comparisons with Michael Jordan, considered the greatest athlete in the sport, to appear on the internet.
On Twitter, some users recalled LeBron’s other feats when comparing him to Jordan. In addition to the greater number of points, the Lakers player has more assists than Magic Johnson, Michael’s former teammate, and more hits on three-balls than Klay Thompson, experienced winger of the Golden State Warriors. “Unbelievable. The best player in history,” commented one profile. “We will never have someone with the dedication and talent of LeBron James,” said another.
On the other hand, there were those who thought it was absurd to compare LeBron with Michael Jordan. “LeBron James is good, the best of his generation, but the best of all? Not even close to Michael Jordan. Jordan is light years ahead and the stats show it,” commented one fan of the Chicago Bulls legend.
To defend Jordan, there were even comparisons with football. “In terms of scoring, LeBron James is for Roberto Dinamite, as Michael is for Pelé,” said one user, referring to the Vasco idol’s record of goals in the Brazilian Championship.
LeBron wins congratulations from Brazilians
The Lakers star received an honor from Google after breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s record. Upon entering the search platform’s website and searching for the name of the Lakers star, an animation with basketballs, baskets, shredded paper and a crown appears on the device’s screen. The player is nicknamed by fans of “King James” (“King James”, in literal translation).
Vinícius Junior and Neymar also revered LeBron James, congratulating the star on their respective official Instagram accounts. The Real Madrid player shared images of James in the match against Thunder with the emoji of a crown and the number of points achieved by the star. Already the number 10 of the selection shared a montage of LeBron with a “round of applause”. Frenchman Kylian Mbappé shared a photo next to the Lakers player with the caption “the best”.
