Law reinforces protection in public schools in Amazonas with assessment of security levels

Amazonas took an important step to ensure safety in state schools. Law No. 6,661/2023, authored by Congresswoman Débora Menezes (PL), was sanctioned, establishing the “School Security Index”, a mechanism that aims to evaluate and improve security levels in the State’s educational institutions.

The objective of the measure is to allow each state school unit to report to the State Department of Education (Seduc-AM) the level of security and violence within the school and its surroundings. The information will be used to build the index, creating prevention measures to ensure safety at school.

According to the legislation, the manager of each school will assign a score from zero to ten to the perceived level of safety. From zero to three for unsafe situations or extreme violence; four to six for violence in exceptional situations; and from seven to ten for total security or no type of indicator of violence in the locality.

“The implementation of the ‘School Safety Index’ will bring preventive and effective measures to guarantee safety in state schools in Amazonas”,

says the parliamentarian.

The new measure, according to the deputy, seeks to directly involve the school community, recognizing the importance of their participation in building a safe environment for students.

Based on the information provided by the schools, Seduc will build the safety index, which will have the results published on the State’s official website. The publication will present the grades awarded in each school unit, as well as the overall average.

The security index may serve as a parameter for planning activities to be implemented by the Public Security Secretariat of the State of Amazonas (SSP/AM).

The idea is that the results make it possible to identify points of improvement and worsening, critical regions and areas with successful initiatives to be reproduced.

The State Executive Branch will be responsible for regulating and applying legislation at the state level. The expectation is that the measures will contribute to promoting a safer school environment that is conducive to learning.

The Débora Menezes Law strengthens concerns about safety in public schools in Amazonas.

Through the “School Safety Index”, emphasizes the parliamentarian, it is hoped to establish a clear overview of the situation and promote effective actions to guarantee the tranquility and well-being of students, teachers and staff.
