Amid Lula’s (PT) vetoes of acts on the military dictatorship, former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) and now president of the NDB (New Development Bank) recalled the 60th anniversary of the 1964 coup and said that history has not erases signs of betrayal of democracy.

The statement was made on the social network X this Sunday morning (31).

“Maintaining the memory and historical truth about the military coup that took place in Brazil 60 years ago, on March 31, 1964, is crucial to ensure that this tragedy does not happen again, as it almost happened recently, on January 8, 2023” , stated Dilma in the publication.

Dilma spoke about the context in which then president João Goulart was overthrown and stated that the moment was marked by betrayal of democracy and the elimination of “cultural, social and economic achievements of Brazilian society”.

“In the past, as now, History does not erase the signs of betrayal of democracy nor does it erase from the national conscience the acts of perversity of those who exiled and stained Brazilian life with blood, torture and death for 21 years”, stated the former president.

“Nor does it rescue those who supported the attack on institutions, democracy and the ideals of a fairer and less unequal society. Dictatorship never again!”

Dilma Rousseff was arrested and tortured during the dictatorship. During her tenure as Presidency of the Republic, she advocated rescuing the memory of the military dictatorship and the recognition of crimes committed by the State.

Dilma’s speech comes amid a context of until now timid demonstrations by politicians allied with Lula after the former president vetoed acts on the 60th anniversary of the coup.

The military dictatorship (1964-1985) was marked by disappearances, deaths and torture carried out by the Brazilian State.
