The Amapá Kassyo Ramos, who until last year was the national president of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB), for which he was a candidate for federal deputy, he assumed the position of first national secretary of the Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), result of the merger between PTB and Patriota. The PRD is the third largest party in Brazil in terms of membership, with 1.3 million people being part of the newest Brazilian party.

The PRD was founded in November 2023, after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) authorized the merger of Patriota and the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB). Ovasco Resende, who was part of Patriota’s leadership, took charge of the new party.

Kassyo Ramos explained that next year he should take over as the party’s general secretary, and that he gave up financial management to take care of his next electoral campaign. Next week, he and President Ovasco Resende will have a meeting with the mayor of São Paulo.

The merger of the two acronyms came as a consequence of the barrier clause. Neither party was able to elect a sufficient number of congressmen to reach the performance clause to access the Party Fund. With the merger, the new party should be able to access this public funding, considering the number of valid votes that both parties received throughout Brazil in the 2022 election.

The PTB managed to elect only one deputy. Patriota managed to elect four deputies in the general elections. Currently, the Chamber of Deputies has four deputies from Patriota, but none from PTB.

The PTB had a candidate for President in the 2022 elections, Father Kelmon. In addition to confrontations that caught the attention of voters, the candidate did not obtain a significant vote in the election and came in 7th place, with 81,129 votes.

Another problem for the PTB in the previous elections was Roberto Jefferson, former deputy and former president of the party, who had a lot of influence in the party. Jefferson was arrested by the Federal Police in October 2022 after shooting at police officers upon his arrest.

With the merger, the PRD will have access to the Party Fund resulting from the sum of the votes that PTB and Patriota received. The TSE had blocked these values until the merger procedure was confirmed. Now, the PRD will have funds to try to increase the number of people elected in the elections
