Bill proposes the mandatory installation of equipment for accessibility and dignity of people with disabilities

Manaus (AM) – State deputy Joana Darc (UB) is the author of Bill (PL) No. 1,179/2023, which defends the mandatory installation of signs in Braille, in relation to bus lines and their travel itinerary, as well as a tactile map at bus stations throughout Amazonas to direct and guide people with visual disabilities (PWD).

The parliamentarian highlights the importance of the proposal on World Braille Day, celebrated this Thursday, January 4th, and aims to raise awareness about the importance of braille as a means of communication for people who are blind or have low vision. For the parliamentarian, inclusion in public transport is necessary to give more dignity to people who communicate using Braille, a universal language.

“This date is very important for visual PWDs and bringing inclusion to them is one of the pillars of our mandate. Therefore, this proposal brings dignity to highways and bus lines. Therefore, we apply inclusion in education, freedom of expression, and access to information and written communication for blind people”,

scored.

If approved by the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) and sanctioned by the Government of Amazonas, non-compliance with the Law will result in a fine of R$ 1,000 (one thousand reais) to the offender and, in the case of a repeat offense, the fine will be doubled.

Braille code on ID

In Amazonas, Ordinary Law No. 5,629, of September 24, 2021, authored by Joana Darc, requires printing with the Braille Code on General Registration (RG) ballots. The Law requires that the Braille System must appear in the documentation in the person’s name, date of birth, date of issue and identity card number.

About World Braille Day

Raising awareness about the importance of Braille as a means of communication for people who are blind or have low vision was the main objective of creating the date. The Braille System was born in France, in 1825, by Louis Braille, and since then it has continued to be used throughout the world by people with visual impairments.

It is the tactile representation of alphabetic and numeric symbols that enable writing and reading, through the combination of 1 to 6 points together. It is read from left to right, with one or both hands and is traditionally written on embossed paper.
