The state secretary of the Government, Gilberto Kassab (PSD), announced this Saturday (23) the PSD’s support for the re-election of the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), in the 2024 election.

Kassab was with Nunes in the Murumbizinho Community, in the east of the city, at a city hall event about paving and flood protection works.

In a press conference after the event, Kassab praised the mayor and said that the PSD “didn’t have many difficulties in coming up with Ricardo’s name.” “We see the city hall present, the city hall knowing how to understand the city’s priorities.”

In addition to the PSD, Nunes seeks support for re-election with other acronyms and names, such as governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The head of the PL, Valdemar da Costa Neto, said this week that the alliance is defined. Bolsonaro, however, signaled two weeks ago that he could support Ricardo Salles, federal deputy for PL — who would need to change parties.

Ricardo Nunes said this Saturday that he still foresees the support of União Brasil, Podemos, Cidadania, PSDB, Republicans and PP, on “a very large front”.

Asked about the possibility of Marta Suplicy, former mayor and secretary of International Relations of her government, running as vice-mayor on the Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) ticket, Nunes stated that she thinks it is unlikely that this will happen. “It doesn’t make sense for someone who has been in government for three years to have an attitude like that. It’s not Marta’s profile.”

Regarding Ricardo Salles, the pre-candidate for re-election stated that the deputy “makes a noise on social media”, but that he would be willing to talk to bring him onto his ticket.

Mayor of São Paulo from 2006 to 2012, Kassab has received criticism due to the party’s advances in city halls in the state. According to members of other parties allied with Governor Tarcísio, he has used the public sector to benefit the party. The state secretary denies it.

On Tuesday (19), Tarcísio stated that he may not support any candidate in the municipal election if that means opposing Bolsonaro.

“What you can expect is that I will never oppose Bolsonaro in any decision, I will not get involved in electoral campaigns where there is a split ball, where there are candidates from our same field, it doesn’t make sense”, he stated at an event to review the management, at Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

Nunes appeared in second place in a Datafolha survey carried out in August, with 24% of voting intentions. Guilherme Boulos was the most cited by those interviewed, with 32%.
