Júnior Favacho debates public policies and awareness about autism – News of Brazil

This Monday, 1st, the Legislative Assembly of Amapá (Alap) was the stage for the event ‘Connection and understanding: together for autism’, organized by the mandate of state deputy Júnior Favacho (MDB), which inaugurated the calendar of activities of the ‘Blue April’, autism awareness month. The main objective of the event was to debate public policies aimed at serving people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (TEA).
During the event, professionals, experts and family members of people with ASD met to discuss strategies and solutions that promote inclusion and improve the quality of life of autistic people. In addition to the lectures given by people directly linked to the cause, the program also included a large round table with the participation of atypical mothers who shared their challenges and difficulties in dealing with the disorder.
Junior Favacho highlighted the relevance of the event and the commitment of his mandate to the cause: “It is essential that we join forces to ensure that public policies adequately meet the needs of people with autism. Our mandate is always committed to contributing to improving care for these families, seeking ways to promote early diagnosis and improve the services offered.”
The parliamentarian also mentioned that his mandate allocated an authoritative amendment to the project “TEWe serve”from Macapá City Hall (PMM), and which intends to speed up the current waiting list for patients awaiting the issuance of a report for Autism Spectrum Disorder in the municipal health network.
The teacher Sânzia Fernandes, who has a series of studies on special education, spoke about the challenges of education for people on the autism spectrum. In her opinion, the event is important to qualify the debate on the topic in the state. “Deputy Júnior Favacho is to be congratulated for starting the “Abril Azul” debates on the first day, bringing professionals, mothers and children to debate inclusion”he said.
The person who corroborated this opinion was the neuropsychologist Francilene Vaz, who has an extensive CV in activism in defense of people with the disorder. She, who discovered she was autistic at the age of 38 and is the mother of children with ASD, stated that discussion on the subject is always necessary, regardless of when it occurs. “I have always been autistic, and having a meeting within the Casa de Leis that provides this debate, this discussion and this exchange of experiences is very important and gives visibility to our cause”.
Larice Furtado, also a mother of autistic children, she took advantage of the debate to talk about the difficulties encountered in ensuring that children diagnosed with ASD receive care from the public health system. “Nowadays, it’s not enough to have a report. Many children wait months for care from a speech therapist or an occupational therapist, and many mothers find it difficult to guarantee this support for their children. I am very grateful for the space at this event, because it will open up possibilities for other people to understand what autism is and realize that public authorities need to better serve these families.”
