Kenyan Josphat Kiprotich and Ethiopian Zinash Debebe won the Rio Marathon this Sunday (11). The race brought together more than 11 thousand athletes through the streets of the center and south zone of Rio de Janeiro.
Kiprotich ran the 42km in 2h13min29s, beating the Rio Marathon record by 2 seconds. For this achievement, he received R$ 50,000 in prize money and a bonus of R$ 20,000 for setting the best mark in the race.
Two-time champion in the last two editions of the Rio Marathon, Justino da Silva did not complete the race. The best Brazilian was Altobeli Santos da Silva, in fourth place, with a time of 2h19min53s.
“The race was very complicated for me. I expected a little more, but unfortunately I didn’t have the leg to keep up with the leaders when they left”, said Altobeli, an athlete with experience in track racing and who makes the migration to street competitions.
In the female, Ethiopian Zinash Debebe crossed the finish line in 2h36min00, lowering the race record by more than a minute. Amanda de Oliveira, former record holder of the 21K race at the Rio Marathon, was the best placed Brazilian and finished in 3rd place, with 2h46min40s.

Each year, the Rio Marathon consolidates itself as the biggest event on the national calendar. In the two days of the event, 40,000 athletes covered distances between 5k and 42km – an amount comparable only to São Silvestre, which gathers around 35,000 people for its 15 km on the last day of the year.
The structure built in Marina da Glória for the collection of kits and start/finish functioned as a gravitational center for the race. There was a stage for shows, brand activations and spaces for interaction between athletes. The arrival, in an easily accessible location and with the capacity to accommodate relatives and friends of the runners, also creates a festive atmosphere in the final kilometer. Point for the organization.
The hot weather punished the athletes, especially the slower ones, who faced a strong sun when the marathon was already entering its fourth hour. It’s the price runners pay to enjoy the postcard scenery of the race.
Speaking of postcards, the Rio Marathon uses and abuses the icons that earned the city the nickname of Marvelous. Sugarloaf Mountain, Dois Irmãos and Christ the Redeemer are eye-candy for runners and make up the landscape for a good part of the route – a feeling reinforced by the comings and goings through Botafogo and Copacabana. A point for reflection is that the race, by opting for the scenarios that tourists love, misses the opportunity to present visitors with another city, more diverse and no less interesting.
Did you feel like running the Rio Marathon? So don’t postpone plans to the last minute. Tickets for next year’s race shouldn’t last long. For this year’s edition, they sold out in January. And the large number of athletes on the streets leaves little doubt that the number of vacancies is at the limit, and should not grow for 2024.
