Doctors say he is fine and expected to be discharged.
Former President of the Republic José Sarney (MDB), 93 years old, had to be hospitalized after suffering a fall at his home in São Luís. According to the former president’s daughter, Roseana, former governor of Maranhão, the fall took place on Monday morning (17). According to Roseana, the head of the Maranhão political clan was examined and is doing well.
“This morning, we had a very big scare. My father tripped and fell. We took him to the hospital and, thank God, the tests were completed and he is doing very well. God willing, he will be fine soon”, said Roseana, in a video released on her social media.
In a note, the medical team at UDI Hospital, which is part of Rede D’Or, reported that, due to the fall, the former president had a “small area of cerebral ischemia” and, therefore, remained hospitalized, under observation, but in “good clinical conditions” and expected medical discharge. The report was unable to contact the hospital for more information.
Sarney presided over Brazil between 1985 and 1990.
On January 15, 1985, the Electoral College (formed by senators and deputies, in addition to delegates from the state legislative assemblies) held the last indirect elections after 21 years of military dictatorship, electing Tancredo Neves (MDB) president from Minas Gerais and José Sarney , vice president.
With the death of Tancredo, on April 21, Sarney was definitively sworn in, becoming the first civilian to assume the Presidency of the Republic after the end of the military regime.
