Janja says Zanin’s meme ‘has a bit of tragic’ – 08/27/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

First lady Rosângela da Silva, Janja, commented on Twitter a meme critical of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Cristiano Zanin, recently appointed by Lula (PT) to the Court.

She said that the montage, which makes fun of the magistrate, is funny, “but it has a little bit of tragedy.”

The video starts with a blurred image of Zanin. Then there is footage of Janja taking off her glasses and cleaning them. When the first lady puts them back on her face, with her glasses clean, she can then see a photo of André Mendonça, STF minister appointed by Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

An internet user posted the video on Twitter asking who was the author of the meme. Janja responded with an emoji of a woman with her hand to her face, covering her eyes, as if she was embarrassed.

Then, an internet user replies: “It seems that @JanjaLula didn’t like your post very much. But we Brazilians don’t like Zanin’s nomination by @LulaOficial.”

She then makes the rejoinder: “The meme is funny, but it also has a bit of tragic.”

The first lady thus indirectly broke the silence she had been maintaining about her husband’s choice for the country’s highest court.

Zanin has been criticized by supporters of Lula for his position in judgments on issues dear to the left.

On Thursday (24), he voted against the decriminalization of drug possession for personal use. Influencer Felipe Neto and federal deputies Sâmia Bonfim (PSOL-SP) and Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) took to social media to criticize the minister.

“I will defend voting for Lula in 2022 to the death, but I classify this as his biggest mistake so far. Unforgivable, inexplicable and unacceptable. We now have 3 ultraconservative ministers in the court”, wrote Felipe Neto.

Center-right and right-wing politicians congratulated the vote of Lula’s former lawyer, such as deputy Silas Câmara (Republicanos-AM), leader of the evangelical group in Congress, Bolsonarist deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR) and Magno Malta .

Last week, the minister presented a report to maintain the conviction of two men accused of stealing a car jack, two gallons of fuel and a bottle half filled with diesel oil — items that, together, were valued at R$ 100.

In this case, he followed the precedents of the STF itself, since one of the defendants was a repeat offender.

Zanin was also criticized by Lula supporters for being the only Supreme Minister to vote against the classification of homotransphobia as a crime of racial injury.

In the vote, the magistrate supports the decision based on procedural issues, and claims that aggression towards LGBTQIA+ people is serious in the country.

Zanin’s recent votes have increased pressure from the president’s base to choose a more left-wing name, preferably a black woman, for the vacant seat of Rosa Weber, who will turn 75 in October and will have to retire.

Lula’s allies, both from the political and legal sides, however, say they doubt that the charges will have any effect on the PT’s decision, who seeks loyalty and greater ease of dialogue with the next member of the court.
