Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said that the acts carried out on January 8 were a trap by the left and not an attempted coup. He also lamented the damage to public buildings.
“We are sure that this was a trap on the part of the left. Unfortunately, the investigation did not go ahead. Not even General G. Dias himself was part of the final body of the CPMI. So, the CPMI served almost no purpose. Unfortunate. It’s not the people who follow us, who accompany us, people from Bolsonar, people on the right, conservative people were never ones to do that.”, said the former president in an interview with CNN Brasil.
And he added: “And the information we had is that the day before the episode, in the camp itself there in Brasília, there were less than 300 people present.”
The former president commented on the arrests of the invaders, but said that the invasions do not constitute a coup. “In order for there to be an attempt [de golpe], there had to be a person at the front. Everything that was investigated did not raise any names. These are assumptions. Who is going to attack old people, elderly people with a Bible under their arm, with the flag in the other hand, common people, cotton candy sellers, Uber drivers, minors, children? Who is going to make a coup in this sense? And another: it was on a Sunday”, said Bolsonaro.
For the former president, a coup “is against a head of state, not against a minister of the Supreme Court, president of the Chamber or the Senate.”
” It is against the head of state, who that morning had already gone to Araraquara — warned by someone about the problem that was going to occur — and went to Araraquara to meet with the mayor of the municipality. We also regret the extremely high punishments that people suffered. Especially because “They are guilty, according to the STF rapporteur, of an armed attempt to change the democratic rule of law. And no weapon was found. (…) Not even a drug dealer gets 17 years in prison,” he added, “he said.
