International Cyclist Union prohibits trans athletes from participating in women’s competitions – 07/14/2023 – Sport

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced this Friday (14) that it will prohibit participation in international competitions in the female category of transgender athletes who have undergone a sex change after puberty.

“From now on, the participation of transgender female athletes who have transitioned after puberty [masculina] in women’s events on the UCI international calendar of the different disciplines will be prohibited in all categories,” the OCI announced in a statement.

Until now, the UCI allowed transgender women who had gone through male puberty to participate in female events if their testosterone level did not exceed 2.5 nanomoles per liter of blood during the previous two years.

At the end of 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave up on establishing uniform guidelines, leaving the decision in the hands of the different international federations. World Athletics, for example, decided to exclude transgender people from women’s track and field competitions.

According to the president of the UCI, the French David Lappartient, it is a “duty” of the instance “to guarantee, above all, the equality of opportunities between all the participants”.

These new rules, which will come into force on July 17, 2023, may evolve in the future based on the progress of scientific knowledge, explained the UCI, which took this decision at the meeting of its management committee in an extraordinary session on the 5th of July.
