A 61-year-old man, one of those injured in the bus accident with Corinthians fans that occurred early on Sunday (20), was discharged from hospital this Wednesday morning (23) in Betim, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte.

Seven people died in the accident, which occurred on a stretch of BR-381. The group was returning to the interior of São Paulo after a match between Cruzeiro and Corinthians on Saturday night (19) in the capital of Minas Gerais.

Another five people are still hospitalized in Betim: four at the Regional Hospital and one at a private health institution. A fan was admitted to Hospital João XXIII, in Belo Horizonte, on the day of the accident.

There is no information about the injured person hospitalized in the capital. Regarding what went to a private health institution in Betim, the city hall informed that the family opted for the transfer because they had a health plan.

Among those hospitalized at the Regional Hospital, the most serious condition is that of the bus driver, aged 39, who remains in a delicate state but, according to the city hall, responds well to treatments. The driver is still in the CTI (Intensive Care Center), as is a 29-year-old fan, who is stable.

A 21-year-old woman should be discharged next. According to the prefecture, the patient’s condition is stable. The test results are being awaited for the possibility of release. Another 56-year-old fan also has a stable condition and is under observation at the surgical clinic unit.

The accident happened on a downhill section of the highway in the municipality of Igarapé, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, around 2:50 am. Civil Police investigate the causes of the accident. There is a suspicion that the bus, which was irregular, has lost its brakes.

The vehicle’s tachograph was expired. According to ANTT (Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres), he had neither registration with the agency nor authorization to carry out interstate passenger transport.

The downhill stretch is approximately eight kilometers. It starts at kilometer 521 of Fernão Dias and goes up to kilometer 529, according to information from Arteris, the highway concessionaire. The accident occurred at kilometer 525.5. In one year, this stretch recorded 67 beats.

According to the concessionaire, the stretch alternates light slopes with steep ones. The company claims that this point of the highway, among the kilometers under its responsibility, is one of the ones that receives the most investments in safety.

Reinforcement of signaling with light warning semi-gantry, signs indicating sharp curves, countdown signs before curves and grooves on the shoulder to alert drivers in case of drowsiness have already been implemented in the section.
