In Peru, Government of AM articulates new business opportunities and partnerships

Vice-governor Tadeu de Souza leads a delegation that participates in the 1st Meeting of the Peru-Brazil Northern Border Committee

The alignment of sustainable economic development policies, in different areas, between Amazonas and Peru guided the State Government’s participation in the 1st Meeting of the Peru-Brazil Northern Border Committee, which began this Tuesday (27), in the Peruvian city from Iquitos. The delegation led by vice-governor Tadeu de Souza reinforced the Wilson Lima administration’s commitment to environmental conservation combined with the fight against poverty.

The event, promoted by the ministries of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and Peru, marked the first official meeting between Amazonian and Peruvian authorities to discuss the creation of the Brazil-Peru Border Integration Zone (ZIF). The idea is to stimulate integration and economic growth between the two countries, on topics such as trade and tourism, the environment, social issues and border facilitation.

In his opening speech, on the campus of the Peruvian National Amazonian University (Unap), the vice-governor reinforced Amazonas’ commitment to collaborating for sustainable regional development among neighboring nations. For him, the priority is to overcome challenges common to the Amazon reality to generate employment and income in both locations.

“This event represents a milestone and the beginning of a joint effort that will stimulate integration and economic development between our countries. On behalf of Governor Wilson Lima, I reaffirm Amazonas’ commitment to economic, sustainable and inclusive development, meaning, above all, overcoming this double challenge of protecting the environment and combating poverty”,

declared Tadeu de Souza.

To representatives of the governments of Peru and the department of Loreto, whose capital is Iquitos, the vice-governor highlighted the need to compensate Amazonian populations for the environmental services provided to the planet and, furthermore, that Brazil-Peru cooperation is important so that products from the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM) reach the Peruvian consumer market, with more than 33 million people.

The event was attended by Peru’s Minister of Development and Border Integration, Raúl Hidalgo; the governor of Loreto, Jorge René Chávez Silvano; the Peruvian ambassador to Brazil, Rómulo Acurio; and the deputy head of the Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay division of Itamaraty, Fábio Antunes.

The relationship continues with the mayor of Benjamin Constant, David Bemerguy; the coordinator of the State Border Center of the Secretariat of Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Sedecti), Guilherme Vilagelim; and the Director of Tourism of the State Tourism Company (Amazonastur), Emmanuelle Pampolha.

Opportunities

Currently, according to the Peruvian embassy in Brazil, there is an unexplored capacity for economic and logistical integration between Amazonas and the Andean country, which share a 2,900 kilometer long border.

For Guilherme Vilagelim, one of the members of the delegation from the Government of Amazonas, the meeting marked the beginning of joint public policy articulations based on the exchange of experiences with the Peruvian authorities in demands linked to the areas of public security, health, education and science and technology.

“The main objective is to create the Border Integration Zone. We understand that, from this committee, it will be possible to think about new economic agreements that bring investments and then move towards the social, environmental and integration areas, following the guidelines of governor Wilson Lima and vice-governor Tadeu de Souza ”,

highlighted the Sedecti representative.

The director of Tourism at Amazonastur, Emmanuelle Pampolha, emphasized that cooperation with Peru could result, in the future, in the creation of an integrated tourist route in the municipalities bordering the state, in order to offer a planned and safe itinerary, in addition to new direct flights between the two countries.

“We are talking about the creation of a tourist route that can involve both countries, mainly with the border municipalities, and also the expansion of the air network with direct flights to the capitals of both Peru and Amazonas, with stops in Tabatinga and Iquitos. Therefore, we encourage visits to these municipalities”,
