In his speech, the governor of Amazonas also warned that more attention and investments in public safety are needed

The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, defended, at the 1st General Assembly of Governors of the Legal Amazon, in Cuiabá (MT), the adoption of integrated actions by the governors of the states in the region allied to public policies. The event ended today (16) the 25th Forum of Governors of the Legal Amazon, held at the headquarters of the Government of Mato Grosso.

“We need to start reflecting on this and review how we are going to establish these criteria so that these actions are connected with public policies; because this is a strategic issue. Not that the State is going to intervene in economic activity, that’s not it, but we need to protect our territory, we need to protect our population”,

declared Wilson Lima.

In his speech, the governor of Amazonas also warned that more attention and investment in public safety is needed. Wilson Lima recalled that only Amazonas, for example, borders three countries (Colombia, Peru and Venezuela) and that integrated forces from the states, the Union and the Amazonian countries are needed, in addition to technologies allied to these actions for the surveillance of borders and fighting crime.

The meeting will have the eight countries that share the territory of the Amazon and has the objective of producing a consensus position regarding the forest that will be taken to global debates on climate action, like the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which takes place in September.

In the Letter produced by the governors, it is highlighted that the size and relevance of the Amazon require attention in the same magnitude, with the strengthening of the regional integration of the states and countries that have the Amazon in their territory; with financing and investments aimed especially at producers and sustainable production processes; and maintaining support for states in combating illegal deforestation.
