The Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, filed a lawsuit against a social network user for the crime of racial insult.
On November 8, an interview in which Almeida commented on the war between Israel and Hamas was posted on the ministry’s official Instagram channel. In one of the comments, a person called the minister a “monkey” and said he should be “there in the crossfire”.
The user identified himself with the profile “cicero5658”, whose person was responsible for a man called Cícero Lima.
In the criminal report sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the minister, in addition to asking for the opening of a police investigation, requests measures, breaking the confidentiality of social media data, to identify the author’s full name and address.
The minister’s lawyer, Victor SG Ferreira, says that freedom of expression does not allow people to spread racist offenses.
“Disapproving the offender’s cowardly and criminal behavior constitutes not only a legal duty, but also an act of anti-racist affirmation, since the individual used a term historically associated with the practices of racial inferiorization and dehumanization of black people,” he declared.
