Manaus (AM) — Who said it’s not possible to learn a new culture without leaving home? Until the end of May, the organization AFS Intercultura Brasil selects people who are interested in opening the doors of their homes to welcome exchange students in the second half of this year. In Manaus, the program is looking for at least twenty host families.

Since 1956, the non-governmental organization — a partner of AFS Intercultural Programs (the oldest international exchange organization) — has invited hosts willing to offer housing, food and care to students who come from more than 50 countries, guaranteeing temporary accommodation of at least fifteen days up to a maximum of eleven months. Selection is simple and starts from the moment families sign up using the registration link (detailing all their information and preferences.

Volunteer and President of the AFS Manaus Committee, Amazonian entrepreneur and pedagogue Jhony Abreu (creator of the startup EduMaker Brasil, focusing on educational robotics) highlights that host families are considered a key element for the success of exchange programs and, the more welcoming registered, more young exchange students can participate in the project.

According to Jhony, there is no specific prerequisite to become a host family, you just need to be willing to connect with the world. “Not even a second language, like English, is a requirement. Of course, it will be of great help if the family knows, but it is not an impediment to applying”, she highlights.

Vice-president of the AFS Manaus Committee, Larissa Aride also makes it clear that AFS is responsible for the foreign participant’s expenses, such as school materials, transportation and medical insurance.

“The health, safety and well-being of our students is the number one priority. AFS volunteers and professionals are committed and trained to assist students and their host families throughout the exchange experience,”

According to her, Manaus has already had more than 20 participating families and all of them received guidance from the NGO volunteers.
