Hélio Cury lives the last days as president of the FPF; remember controversies

Hélio Pereira Cury lives out his last days as president of the Paraná Football Federation (FPF). According to the president who spent the most time at the head of the entity, Cury can no longer be re-elected and must pass the baton to his son.

The ticket “Confiança e Inovação”, which has Hélio Pereira Cury Filho as a candidate for president, is widely favored in the election, which takes place this Saturday (11).

The current president completed three terms at the head of the institution, from 2007 to 2023 – he just doesn’t surpass the period of his predecessor, Onaireves Moura, who was in office from 1985 to 2007.

Cury assumed the presidency in 2007, after Moura was removed by court decision. He had been an opposition candidate in 2004, he lost the dispute, but after the crimes committed by his opponent, the Justice ruled in favor of the current president.

The following year, in April 2008, he was elected with a wide advantage over his opponents at the time, Rafael Iatauro and Moacir Peralta. The leader lived a longer term than usual, until 2015.

The reason was a collective measure by the CBF that extended the period of all the presidents of federations in power aiming at the organization of the 2014 World Cup. During the period, he was a member of the Executive Committee of Paraná for World Cup Affairs.

In 2015, in turn, was the only year that his re-election was threatened. Athletico, Coritiba and Paraná came together to try to remove the representative from office with massive support for candidate Ricardo Gomyde. The voting was tight, with 33 votes for Cury, who had strong support from amateur clubs, against 25 for the opponent.

In 2019, Cury was re-elected for the third time without a panel. The single group received 49 favorable votes from the 61 members eligible to vote. By statute, the current president can no longer run for re-election and must leave office by the end of April.

Last year, Hélio Cury was elected vice-president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) during the term of Ednaldo Rodrigues, in the period between 2022 and 2026. He even took over the presidency for a few days in April during a trip from President Rodrigues abroad.

Biography

Hélio Pereira Cury is a businessman, but he has been in sports in Paraná for over 45 years. He was an athlete, coach, director, advisor and president of several teams in the capital. He also served as a member of the Sports Commission of the Municipality of Curitiba and director of the Municipal Sports Secretariat. Before becoming president, he was vice-president of the FPF from 1984 to 1985.

Remember Hélio Cury’s controversies throughout the FPF mandates

Hélio Cury lived with controversies throughout his mandate. In 2015, mainly, some irregularities were pointed out by a judicial expert, who examined the accounts of the Paraná Football Federation (FPF), for the period between July 2010 and June 2015.

The work of the Justice expert, Sérgio Henrique Miranda de Sousa, lasted three months and was part of the action that Athletico and Coritiba filed against the manager. Remember some controversies involving the president:

The expert report at the time revealed transactions made by the FPF with President Hélio Cury’s sporting goods company, the store Hélio Cury Comércio de Artigos Esportivos Ltda. The enterprise still works today. He also pointed out purchases made by the entity in the company that had the manager’s nephew as a partner, the Linha de Fundo Comércio de Artigos Esportivos Ltda.

Hiring relatives

The judicial expert identified the hiring by the FPF of four relatives and a company linked to the wife of the president of the entity, Hélio Cury. The hired relatives were the president’s son – today a presidential candidate -, his daughter-in-law, a nephew and a niece. After Law nº 13,155 (PROFUT), which speaks in Chapter III about “reckless management” of an entity when hiring relatives of up to third degree, it had to dismiss them.

The expert’s analysis at the time also indicated the lack of transparency of the FPF’s accounts. Documents such as balance sheets, audit reports and the Fiscal Council are presented to affiliates only on the dates of the entity’s general meetings.

Increased donations in the year prior to the elections, allowances for the Fiscal Council and questionable financial management were also in the expert’s file of considerations.
