Hcor, a private hospital located in the capital of São Paulo, recorded a 109% increase in Covid-19 cases treated in its emergency room after Carnival. If compared to the number of patients infected with the new coronavirus in December 2023, the increase reaches 261%.

In the last month of last year, the institution dealt with 88 cases of this type. The number rose to 94 in January this year, following an upward trend and reaching 318 this Wednesday (21).

Between the 1st and 8th of this month, on the eve of the festivities, Hcor welcomed 103 people who had been diagnosed with Covid-19 into its emergency room. Shortly after Carnival, another 215 cases arrived at the unit.

According to Hcor, the considerable increase is explained by JN.1, a subvariant of omicron that tends to lead to hospitalization of elderly people who have some comorbidity, in addition to the lack of vaccine booster.

“Unfortunately, Covid-19 is here to stay, and it is necessary for people to continue taking the same care as before”, says the infectious disease specialist and coordinator of the Hospital Infection Control Service and the Hcor Vaccination Center, Juliana Oliveira da Silva .

“Avoiding crowds, washing your hands well, cleaning contact areas, covering your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and, above all, wearing a mask, if you feel any flu-like symptoms, are the first steps to stopping this new wave of infections”, further says.

The average age of patients admitted to Hcor’s emergency room is 85 years old, but the vast majority do not experience serious conditions, says the hospital.

Of the 44 hospitalizations that occurred at the São Paulo hospital until February 8, 62% of patients had some type of cardiovascular disease, 45% metabolic disease, 12% kidney disease, and 7% neoplasia.
