Indigenous children receive first doses of dengue vaccine in Manaus

Indigenous children from the Parque das Tribos community, in the Tarumã neighborhood, in the West Zone of Manaus, were the first to receive doses of the dengue vaccine this Thursday (22). The capital of Amazonas received 65,037 doses of the Qdenga vaccine.

In the initial phase of the strategy, children aged 10 and 11 will be immunized, with the vaccine being offered in 171 vaccination rooms managed by the Municipal Health Department (Semsa).

The urban village Parque das Tribos brings together a population of 2,500 indigenous people from more than 30 different ethnicities. Vaccination at the Family Health Unit (USF), which is located in the community.

The leader of the Parque das Tribos community, Elisa Saterê, stated that she welcomed the opening of the vaccination campaign with great satisfaction and reinforced the symbolic and social importance for the indigenous population.

“We are very pleased to know that our community [Comunidade Parque das Tribos], is being one of the first to open this campaign, which is so important for us, both the indigenous population and the population in general.” reinforces the community leader.

The leadership also highlighted the importance of care and prevention measures.

In addition to the capital of Amazonas, other municipalities in the State began the vaccination campaign against dengue, Careiro da Várzea and Autazes were the pioneers in Amazonas. Rio Preto da Eva and Careiro begin vaccination in the State this week. The municipalities of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, Nova Olinda do Norte and Presidente Figueiredo plan to start vaccination next Monday (26).

The goal of the vaccination strategy is to reach 90% of the population aged 10 to 14 years. Following the guidelines of the National Immunization Program, the age range will increase progressively.

According to the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel, in Amazonas, from January this year until Wednesday (21), 1,972 cases of dengue were confirmed. Another 4,746 cases were reported due to suspicion of the disease. In 2024, 113 deaths were confirmed as a result of dengue infection across the country.

Vaccination

To receive the vaccine, the child must be accompanied by their parents or guardians, carrying their official identification document, National Health Card (CNS) or CPF, and vaccination card.

Dengue prevention

The most effective strategy for preventing dengue is to prevent the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the disease’s vector, from reproducing. Eliminating breeding sites includes avoiding standing water in old tires, plant pots, empty bottles and plastic containers.

Keeping backyards and areas around houses clean and free of debris is also strategic to reduce mosquito breeding sites. The Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP) also recommends the strategy of inspecting the residential or professional space every week, in ten minutes, to eliminate breeding sites.
