Guimarães defends Centrão’s entry into government and criticizes the left

The leader of the government in the Chamber of Deputies, José Guimarães (PT-CE), criticized the speech of the left, which is contrary to the expansion of government alliances with Centrão parties, such as the PP and the Republicans. He defended that the entry of subtitles should contribute to improving the relationship between the PT administration and Congress. The statements were given in an interview with the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

Criticism of sectors of the left came when commenting on the participation of President Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and Centrão in the approval of the government’s guidelines in the first half.

“President Lira’s participation was fundamental. There are some voices from beyond that prefer defeat and isolation, because that’s a lot on the left, they prefer defeat to be able to carry out ideological proselytism. Whoever governs has to have an institutional base, and good leadership is one that manages to dialogue, firstly, with the President of the House and, secondly, with the House as a whole”, said Guimarães.

According to him, Arthur Lira has been very “solidarity” with the government. “He represents another political force, he is not from the PT, but we know that nobody governs well and nobody exercises leadership if there is no permanent dialogue”, he pointed out.

PP and Republicans with consolidated entry

On Tuesday (18), Guimarães admitted that the entry of the PP and Republican parties into the government “is consolidated”.

“The thesis of incorporating these parties into the government is already consolidated. Also those names that appeared in the press, which were the nominations of the parties, however, the president did not hit the gavel. He didn’t deliberate anything, what size, to where, or anything,” he stated.

Guimarães was referring to André Fufuca (PP-MA) and Silvio Costa Filho (Republicans-PE), who met with the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, on the same day. Behind the scenes, the entry of the two is seen as a treat to Congress for the approval of the government’s casting vote in the Tax Resources Administration Council (CARF).

Guimarães defends the release of amendments

In the same interview, the government leader also commented that, within the negotiation between the government and the Legislature, “the position of negotiating amendments is not illegitimate”. The statement marks a change in position within the PT, which, before the opposition, criticized the Bolsonaro government for releasing amendments in important votes.

“The amendments are in the budget law and in the Constitution. I don’t see any illegality or anything ugly about it. The same thing is about participation in government. Which party does not negotiate? If the party supports the government, votes for the government, what is the problem with negotiating office?”, he said.

He also claimed that the release of amendments is not a matter of bargaining between the Powers of the Republic. “This doesn’t have to be seen as a bad thing and it has to be done transparently, as we are doing now. We are not doing anything for bargaining, because we represent a government with a broad front and these parties, in addition to the left field, can help and have helped a lot in building this new governance”, said the deputy to Sheet.
