Guarulhos begins vaccination against dengue; see photos – 02/20/2024 – Balance and Health

Housewife Esmeralda Aparecida Campos, 63, made it a priority for this Tuesday (20) to vaccinate her granddaughter against dengue.

At around 11 am, Emanuelly Victória da Silva, 10, was the 12th child to receive the first dose of the vaccine at UBS Tranquilidade, in Guarulhos, Greater São Paulo. The station has set aside a room especially for administering the vaccine, which does not require an appointment. The person responsible for the patient fills out a health questionnaire and another to record the dose, and the dose is administered.

The city began immunizing children aged 10 to 11 this Tuesday, as did the São Paulo municipalities of Arujá, Ferraz de Vasconcelos, Guararema, Mogi das Cruzes, Santa Isabel and Suzano.

“Taking the vaccine was good, because it protects against the virus”, says the girl.

The grandmother was informed about the start of vaccination by her brothers, who are firefighters, and through a councilor. “I decided to come on the first day. That’s the end of it, right?” Many of those who took their children to be vaccinated told the reporter the same fear: that the vaccine would run out.

The municipality received 34,270 doses of the Qdenga vaccine, which are enough to immunize 77% of the city’s target audience.

According to Amanda Loos Agra, director of the Guarulhos Department of Comprehensive Health Assistance, in this first phase children up to 10 and 11 years, 11 months and 29 days will be vaccinated.

“The Ministry of Health gave us a forecast of more than 100 thousand doses of vaccine so that we can vaccinate the public up to 14 years, 11 months and 29 days, and complete the vaccination schedule for those who received the first dose”, he states.

“Taking into account the public that does not receive the vaccine, the children infected in the last six months and the fact that some end up not being vaccinated, we will cover the largest number of children”, says the manager.

Forklift operator Raphael Thiago Martins, 34, took his son David Lourenzo Martins, 11, to the UBS, but was unable to vaccinate him. Due to an autoimmune disease, the boy uses corticosteroids and is not eligible to receive the vaccine.

Children who have had dengue fever in the last six months or who have had an acute febrile illness in the 24 hours prior to administration of the dose cannot receive the vaccine. Immunocompromised people, who have untreated HIV, undergo chemotherapy, use immunobiological medications, and pregnant women cannot be vaccinated either.

Self-employed Gilson Marques, 55, also took the day to take his granddaughter, Ana Clara Marques de Abreu, 11, to the health center to receive the vaccine. “I found out about the campaign on TV and wanted to come on the first day. I’ve had dengue fever and I know what it’s like,” he says.

To be vaccinated, the child must be accompanied by a guardian and present an original document with photo, vaccination card and proof of residence. The report noted that some children were unable to be immunized because of incomplete documentation.

Housewife Hilda Ferreira, 72, is the grandmother of Kyara Piovani, 11, who was vaccinated this Tuesday afternoon. “Dengue scares me. A friend’s daughter is hospitalized with severe dengue,” she says. “I hope the vaccine reaches us soon.”

The movement at UBS Tranquilidade was more intense at the end of the morning. As of 1:30 p.m., 29 children had been vaccinated. To date, the municipality has recorded 3,128 confirmed cases of the disease and the death of a 104-year-old woman.

From 8am to 4pm, except at UBS Cecap, Tranquilidade, Paulista and Flor da Montanha and at the Children and Adolescent Outpatient Clinic, which will see patients until 6pm.
