Party of the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, the PSOL approved a resolution this Monday (29) in which it blames the Defense department for the deaths that continue to occur among indigenous people of the Yanomami ethnic group.

“The Yanomami issue stands out, in which the negligence of the Ministry of Defense compromised the actions to combat illegal mining and protect the Yanomami in the region”, says a resolution from the party’s National Executive.

The topic became a factor of wear and tear for the Lula (PT) government and for Minister Guajajara in particular.

In 2023, there were 308 deaths in the Yanomami indigenous land, located in Roraima and Amazonas, a slight decrease compared to the 343 in 2022, the last year of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) government.

The minister’s allies have said that the blame lies with the military, who would not be using sufficient resources to rescue sick indigenous people and remove miners from the demarcated land.

In the resolution, the PSOL says that the minister, in her first year of government, structured the portfolio and demarcated eight indigenous territories. But he emphasizes that the ministry “has a series of challenges to face in relation to the protection of indigenous rights and territories.”
