The governor Clécio Luís, from Amapá, will participate, next Monday, January 8, in Brasília, in the “Unshaken Democracy” act that will mark the first year of anti-democratic attacks committed by radical protesters against the result of the 2022 presidential elections in a frustrated coup attempt of State. Proposed by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the ceremony will be held at the National Congress. In addition to the presidents of the Three Powers – Executive, Legislative and Judiciary – the event must be attended by governors, parliamentarians, representatives of civil society, ministers and representatives of the courts of Justice and legislative assemblies.
The presence of the governor Clécio Luís was confirmed by the State Secretariat of Communication, in response to a question made by News of Brazil on the subject.
Security
A special security scheme was planned for next Monday, in Brasília. More than two thousand military police officers from the Federal District must carry out extensive patrolling in the city – a number four times greater than the number employed on the Esplanada, on January 8, 2023, according to a report by the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) that investigated the coup acts that day. At that time, 580 PMs were employed.
Despite the reinforcement, the federal government reported that no threats to the security of the event that will be held in Congress were identified. The strategy for the security of the Esplanada was agreed by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Government of the Federal District.
Remember the attacks of January 8th
On January 8, 2023, radical protesters against the result of the 2022 presidential elections, in which Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emerged victorious, invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Three Powers – Palácio do Planalto (Executive), Federal Supreme Court (Judicial ) and National Congress (Legislative) – in an attempt to promote a coup d’état. According to the STF, 243 people were arrested inside public buildings and in Praça dos Três Poderes (161 men and 82 women), following police action to regain control of these buildings.
The latest balance released by the Supreme Court shows that, to date, the Court has sentenced 30 people for crimes such as criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempted coup d’état and deterioration of listed property. There are around 200 defendants left to be tried, referring to the defendants who were present in the acts of vandalism in Praça dos Três Poderes.
