Government wants to use EU labor rights agreement to negotiate with apps – 12/17/2023 – Panel

The Ministry of Labor wants to use the guidelines recently drawn up by European Union parliamentarians to pressure apps to negotiate a regulatory proposal that is more favorable to workers, given the resistance expressed by app companies in the country.

The agreement released by the European Parliament establishes indicators to be considered when establishing the classification of the worker’s relationship with the company, such as control over the assignment of tasks and rules on the appearance or behavior of the app driver, out of a total of five.

The rules had been heavily criticized by Delivery Platforms Europe, formed by Uber, Bolt, Deliveroo, among others.

In Brazil, a proposal designed by the government would include the payment of contributions to the INSS (National Social Security Institute), life insurance of R$40,000 and a minimum hourly wage, as shown by Sheet. Workers could be hired as independent contractors or through the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws).

The project was the solution arbitrated by the government after an impasse between workers and companies. Now, the Ministry of Labor’s idea is to use European guidelines, considered stricter, to reach a middle ground with apps that benefits workers.
