Government wants to launch app against cell phone theft this month – 10/07/2023 – Panel

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security wants to launch an application and a website by the end of October where users can register their cell phone in advance so that, in the event of theft or theft, trusted people can block the device.

In this way, it would be possible to prevent the robber from accessing banking and personal applications, minimizing the damage caused to the cell phone owner, says the department’s executive secretary, Ricardo Cappelli.

The initiative is a partnership with Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) and Anatel (national telecommunications agency). Cappelli also says that conversations are taking place with Google and Meta to allow blocking of the Android operating system, in the first case, and social networks, in the second.

The owner of the device must register the cell phone in the application or on the website, authenticating via the government’s Gov.br environment. “There, the user registers two trusted people who would be called in the event of theft or theft. The authorized person will be able to enter and block the device”, says Cappelli.

This way, it would be possible to speed up this step, instead of the user needing to call banks and the cell phone operator to report the theft.

In the secretary’s opinion, the measure could drastically reduce cell phone theft in the country without confrontation or violence. “You discourage theft. The thief won’t even have access to the apps and the device will be worth R$10. If Google comes in, it will erase the Android operating system. Then it becomes a piece of metal.”
