Initiative includes door-to-door visits to inform and show residents the benefits of basic sanitation

Manaus (AM) — The Government of Amazonas is going to start next week the sanitary sewage works of the Social and Environmental Program of Manaus and Interior (Prosamin+). But, before the machines enter, starting this Wednesday (06), an awareness campaign is being carried out with the community, to show the objectives with the works and their benefits. The action is taking place in the area that goes from the Nova República neighborhood, in the south zone, to the Sharp Community, in Armando Mendes, in the east zone of Manaus.

Prosamin+ is a program carried out by the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), an agency linked to the State Secretariat for Urban and Metropolitan Development (Sedurb). Sedurb’s secretary, Marcellus Campêlo, explains that a differential of the works carried out by the Government of Amazonas is the priority given to people.

“Through this campaign, for example, we seek to establish a partnership with the community, so that they understand that sewage is not just a question of infrastructure, it is an investment in the well-being of residents, in the preservation of natural resources and in the future of new generations. We have studies that show that, in areas that received basic sanitation via Prosamin, the rate of diarrheal diseases in children reduced”,

highlights.

UGPE’s Social sub-coordinator, Viviane Dutra, points out that, more than informing about the works, the objective is to guide the population about what sanitation is and how it will directly impact the health and quality of life of those who live in the region. “Popular participation influences and attests to the quality of the works, so, in addition to informing, we keep mechanisms for complaints and suggestions always available”he says.

Prosamin+ will build 59 kilometers of sewage collection networks and seven pumping stations, with an investment of R$95 million, R$61.1 million of which through the program. The other R$ 35.9 million will be made possible through Technical Cooperation between the State Government, the City Hall and the Águas de Manaus concessionaire, which aims, among other actions, at building a Sewage Treatment Station (ETE). The ETE will be built by Águas de Manaus on land donated by the State.

Awareness raising in the area begins with a meeting with leaders from the Sharp and Nova República neighborhood communities, followed by a door-to-door approach to residents. As the sanitary sewage work advances, all residences will be informed and sensitized.

For a more comprehensive approach, the campaign will include informative and interactive graphic material, signs, sound cars, in addition to socio-environmental activities and the use of social networks and the UGPE website.

The UGPE designer, Polyana Encarnação, who worked on the visual identity of the awareness campaign, emphasizes the importance of bringing a clear, engaging and impactful message to residents, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the works. “This allows the community to understand the direct benefits to public health, the environment and quality of life,” she points out.

The awareness campaign will also involve visits by students and residents of the areas covered by Prosamin+ to sanitation works, such as the ETE Educandos, completed in a previous stage of the program. The UGPE initiative seeks to show, in practice and on site, engineering, environmental, social and work safety aspects, inserted in the works.

Socio-environmental actions are also planned in schools, so that children and adolescents are multipliers of information about the importance of sanitary sewage.

Prosamin+

Prosamin+ is urbanizing 340,000 square meters in the Igarapé do Quarenta area, in the stretch between Manaus 2000 avenue, in the south zone, and the Sharp Community, in the Armando Mendes neighborhood, in the east zone. The program will benefit more than 60,000 people from the Japiim, Coroado, Industrial District and Armando Mendes neighborhoods.
