Government base wants to turn 8/1 CPI against Bolsonarists – 04/20/2023 – Panel

Parliamentarians from the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government base claim that the Bolsonarists’ proposal to open the CPMI to investigate the attacks on the headquarters of the Powers on January 8 was a huge shot in the foot and that they will now use all the instruments that will have on hand so that supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) respond for their possible involvement in the episode.

The idea, according to them, is to repeat what they classify as the success of the CPI of Covid, which led to a deepening of investigations into possible crimes and errors in the face of the pandemic by the Bolsonaro government, which suffered at the time.

Parliamentarians and palace assistants even encourage the new participation of the shock troops of the previous CPI, with names like Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), who gained prominence in the clashes with Bolsonaristas.

In the Chamber, they want names like André Janones (Avante-MG) and Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ). For the government supporters, one of the priorities will be to summon businessmen, break secrecy, find out financiers.

Lulista deputies have been talking about summoning the son of the former president, councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ), appointed over the years as a reference figure for Bolsonarist virtual strategies, and the former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security of the Federal District Anderson Torres, arrested three months ago on suspicion of omission in the coup attempt.

“When we went against the CPMI, it was because of a very clear understanding that the case was already being investigated and that it made no sense to block the Congressional agenda for Bolsonaristas to invent narratives. Since it will be installed, it will be an opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons and even hold Bolsonarist parliamentarians accountable, who participated, often as intellectual mentors”, says Guilherme Boulos (SP), PSOL leader.

The Planalto Palace does not work with the hypothesis that the CPMI presidency and the rapporteurship remain with the opposition, as the PL wants. The assessment is that there are a majority of centrist parties to elect a table that may not even be pro-government, but definitely will not be Bolsonarist. The government worked to not be walled in like Bolsonaro was with Covid-19.

Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) goes further and says that the government will have more strength than Bolsonaristas in the CPMI and will choose president and rapporteur.

“I think it will be a CPI that can rebuild a democratic front, it will isolate Bolsonarists again. It will bring the subject back. I cannot see how it can be bad for the Lula government. They were saying that they wanted the CPI just to create a narrative with their group. Now the real CPI has arrived. They made a lot of mistakes”, he says.

Senator Renan Calheiros tells the Panel that the choice of who will represent the MDB at the CPMI is up to the leader of the party in the House, Eduardo Braga (AM), and that it is not good to deal with the issue publicly. He notes, however, that the mixed commission format, with deputies and senators, should give a less investigative tone and with more clashes than the Covid CPI, composed only of senators.
